George W. Bush took the first debate as an opportunity to try to drive home lies and mystify the minds of the American people. Bush said that he thought that the greatest threat the American people face now is loose nukes in the hands of terrorists. Yet his administration has spent less money trying to secure nuclear material, done nothing to thwart North Korea or Iran's nuclear ambitions, and wasted money on a missile defense plan.
This last point is the most egregious. The missle defense plan takes money from more important and proven safeguards against nuclear threats. The missile defense plan puts us at odds with Russia, who should be our strongest ally in this fight. The missile defense plan could also give Americans a false sense of safety.
John Kerry spelled out a plan for securing loose nuclear material and making it a priority. Doing so will benefit not just America, but the entire world. This is a task so important that we cannot wait another decade accomplish it.
The President repeated his admonishment that we must not return to a pre-9/11 mentality. Why is he pursuing policies that return America to a pre-1990 stance?
